Post-Hurricane West Palm Beach, Floridafrom Florida Memory
One of hundreds of photos in the archives showing the afternoon of a devastating hurricane that hit South Florida in 1926. I know Hollywood, which had only been incorporated the year before, was heavily damaged, with buildings — including the magnificent beach hotels — flattened. WPB was older but took a major hit as well. (And BTW, hurricanes in those days didn’t have names; people would just say “the storm of ‘26” or call it by the date and year.) Anyway, for more pictures of West Palm Beach from the time of this storm, click here. You can also search on other cities like Ft. Lauderdale, Hollywood, Miami, etc.

West Palm Beach, Floridafrom Florida Memory
There are many great photos and illustrations in the Florida Memory archives for those who are interested in Florida history. I am mostly looking for examples of Deco when it was knew but when I find pictures that are just neat as historical reference, sharing those. This is a view of the shore drive along Lake Worth (separating WPB from West Palm) in the 1920s.

Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco, CaliforniaHistoric 1957 Photo, San Francisco Historical Photograph Collection
Look, an Art Deco bridge. Hmm, seems to be something in front of it. Something… curvy!
From the San Francisco Public Library’s archive:

Sue Boomer preparing to cycle across the Golden Gate Bridge
On back: “Redwood Empire Association News Bureau; 85 Post Street, San Francisco 4, Calif. (Redwood Empire Association Photo). SITTIN’ PRETTY—On a bicycle built for one, in this case for lovely Sue Boomer, this curvaceous Redwood Empire beauty is ready to cycle over Golden Gate Bridge, whose 20th anniversary will be observed on May 27. A ‘Salute to Travel’ is the central observance theme. Miss Boomer, no doubt, will be the recipient of many salutes as she travels through the Redwood Empire.”.

One of the many pics in the archive taken during bridge opening festivities. And certainly one of the funniest!
From the San Francisco Public Library’s archive:
